What should I start with for a home theater system? how many amps/watts or whatever?

Okay I'm totally in the dark when it comes to this and I want to buy a home theater system for my bedroom to hook up to my dvd player, I just need the speakers, and the speakers that can hook up to my dvd player but I am willing to buy the reciever but only if it comes with any speficiations I should look for? Like how much should I expect to pay for? I need more than brand names like how many Amps or Watts should be good to start off with, I have a collection of horror movies so if that helps any yea, thanks so much for all your help.

Your question is quite broad and therefore not likely to get a lot of intelligent answers. Some general thoughts:

1) You will need a receiver to drive the speakers.

2) Watts are not nearly as important as quality. If you stick with good brands you will not need to concern yourself with watts unless you are going to drive some very big and inefficient speakers.

3) Price range for a surround sound system can be anywhere from $300 to $250,00 (that is one reason it is hard to respond briefly and specifically to your question).

4) Do not buy any systems for sale in parking lots or on ebay that you cannot listen to first. There are a lot of scam brands out there.

5) Do not be deceived. Bose is a rip-off brand that does not have great sound.

6) Your speakers make the biggest difference in your sound. Some good brands include M%26amp;K, Monitor, B%26amp;W, Paradigm, Energy, PSB, Wharfedale, Boston Acoustics and many more.

7) Good receiver brands include Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz, and Harmon Kardon. I like Denon.

8) Get some decent quality interconnects and speaker wire.

9) Shop around alot! Listen to different systems with the same CD you bring with you.

10) If you buy over the internet you can often get great deals. If you buy at a high-end store you will get superior customer support and service. Give them a chance to price match.

Once you get a budget in mind and some brands to choose between, ask us here in the home theater section again. You will get some very informed answers (as well as some not so informed ones).

Check out the system we bought for $1,000...It proves you don't have to spend a lot of money to get great sound...Click right here: http://www.avtruths.com/bangforbuck.html
Since you're totally new and it's just a bedroom system, your best bet is a HTIB: Home Theater In a Box.

These Onkyos are your best bet:

Most stores (CircuitCity %26amp; BestBuy) carry them, so go check them out and then buy from the site above for half the price.

If you want to spend $1,000+, pair this speaker system with a receiver. These speakers are internet only, cutting out the middle man, so they're much higher quality for the $1 then what you'll find at any store.

If you have a specific budget that's higher than the above mentioned systems, shoot me an email.

PS+ order your speaker cables from monoprice.com. Forget about Monster cables and all that other crap, you're paying purely for the name- a piece of oxygen free copper is just that. Nothing more.
